Do You Know Who You Are?

October 10, 2014 | Comments Off on Do You Know Who You Are?

“God sees with utter clarity who we are. He is undeceived as to our warts and wickedness. But when God looks at us that is not all He sees. He also sees who we are intended to be, who we will one day become.” — John Ortberg

1 John 3:2NKJV  Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

2 Corinthians 5:20-21 NKJV 20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

We spend a lot of time trying to be what we think we should be or in some cases, what others think, feel or believe we should be.  We are blinded by this desire and therefore cannot recognize that the One who created us, may have something to say about who we are and/or who we are to become.

It sounds obvious that we should be more concerned about who God wants us to be, yet, it doesn’t stop us from trying to be something else or in our minds, something more.

I find that the real issue is interpreting what we do for a living, what we get paid for, or what our titles and positions may be, as determining who we are.  We unknowingly or purposely, live our lives based on this.

I believe that as Christians, we suffer from an identity crisis. When we are with our families and/or friends, we are one way.  When we are at work, we are another way. At church we are yet, even another way.  We may not think we are, but if we are honest with ourselves, we know that this is something we often times struggle with.

The good news is that even if we are struggling with who we are, God knows exactly. And because He loves us, He continues to guide, direct, mold and shape us into who He created us to be.  Sometimes is a soft whisper to let us know that He’s there.  Sometimes we read a scripture that reminds us of who we are in Him.  And sometimes, He allows a storm or test/trial to come our way to let us know that as His child, we can call on Him.

And that my brothers and sisters, is something to be thankful for.

May you find your identity in Him.
